Material selection and application analysis of stainless steel pipelines for shipbuilding industry

In the shipbuilding industry, stainless steel chemical pipelines need to withstand seawater corrosion, chemical media, and complex working conditions, and the selection of materials must meet multiple performance requirements. The most widely used materials currently include the following categories:

1. Austenitic stainless steel series
316L (UNS S31603) is the preferred material for ship piping systems, with a molybdenum content of 2% -3%, which can effectively resist chloride ion corrosion. Typical applications include ballast water systems and cooling water pipelines, with a working temperature range of -196 ℃ to 400 ℃. 304 (UNS S30403) is commonly used for transporting low corrosive media, such as freshwater systems.

2. Dual phase stainless steel series
2205 (UNS S32205) has a dual phase structure of austenite and ferrite, with a yield strength of 450MPa, which is twice that of ordinary austenitic steel. Specially suitable for low-temperature pipeline systems of LNG transport ships, with a corrosion resistance equivalent PREN ≥ 35, and can resist high concentration chloride ion environments.

3. Super austenitic stainless steel
904L (UNS N08904) and 254SMO (UNS S31254) contain more than 6% molybdenum element, with a PREN value exceeding 40, and are specifically designed for extreme corrosive environments such as desulfurization devices and seawater desalination systems. But its processing difficulty and cost are increased by about 30% -50% compared to conventional steel grades.

4. Martensitic stainless steel
17-4PH (UNS S17400) can achieve a tensile strength of 1310 MPa through age hardening treatment and is commonly used in high-pressure hydraulic pipelines. But the corrosion resistance is relatively weak and needs to be used in conjunction with surface treatment.

When selecting materials, it is important to consider three major factors: medium composition (Cl - concentration, pH value), working pressure (PN16-PN100), and temperature fluctuations (-50 ℃ to 200 ℃). The shipbuilding industry generally follows standards such as ASTM A312 and JIS G3459. For special medium transport pipelines, intergranular corrosion testing and stress corrosion cracking assessment are required. In recent years, the market share of duplex stainless steel has grown at an average annual rate of 8%, gradually replacing traditional materials as the preferred solution for the new generation of ship pipelines.
